The Astrology of an Entrepreneur

Is writing your own paycheck in your stars?

By Maria DeSimone

Over the summer I did something I have never done. I took time off from my business, Insightful Astrology. I didn't teach classes, I saw clients on an extremely limited basis, and I basically put my inner entrepreneur on the back burner to enjoy extra time with family.

In the interim, I did something I have not done since I was 22-years-old: I financially relied on a job that provides a steady paycheck.

On the one hand, I might have needed the break from being my usual aggressive, business-oriented self. But on the other hand, I realized a temporary shift in my personality that happened ... a change that makes me entirely uncomfortable to admit.

I became complacent.

I got used to the reliability of a steady job. True, it is a job I 100 percent LOVE doing. I enjoy the people I work with and I'm learning a thing or two along the way. Still, while I have worked hard to earn this rare opportunity in my field, I find that for someone who has as much entrepreneurial energy as myself this is a strange place to be -- working for a company I didn't create. Why?

Do you have money-making clues in your chart?

If you have heavy Cardinal placements in your horoscope (Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn), if you have heavy Fire in your chart (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) and most definitely if you have strong Mars and/or Pluto signatures in your chart (Aries or Scorpio energy, personal planets in aspect to Mars and/or Pluto) then you have signs of incredible entrepreneurial ability.
You must be the boss. You must always be hungry. You must eat what you kill.

If you're not doing this, you don't feel alive. You get all dusty inside. It's an icky feeling. Now, I'll admit, this is in direct opposition to my Taurus Sun nature, which thrives on security. The Taurus in me loves knowing that all the bills are paid and there's nothing to worry about.

But the Aries Rising, Cardinal T-square, 8th house Sagittarius Moon, Capricorn Midheaven and Mars square Pluto in my chart yell at my Sun every time she thinks she's OK. The rest of my chart screams "Idiot, what are you doing? The only security in this world is the kind you create for yourself. Stay hungry if you want to be successful. If you don't want to starve ... if you want to thrive ... you must EAT WHAT YOU KILL!"

How strong is your ambition?

I may be in a spiritual business, but I have no qualms telling you I am extraordinarily ambitious. It's who I am. I want to be the most successful businesswoman I can be while helping as many people as possible in the process. And yes, that includes making as much money as I can while I'm doing what I love (says the Taurus).

But if you've got the chart of an entrepreneur you know that you can only rely on the paycheck you write for yourself. It's important that I never depend on anyone else to feed me. Ah, but it's also important for a successful business person to learn how to work well with others -- to collaborate.

That's the dichotomy between Aries (self-motivated) and Libra (partner-motivated). Both are Cardinal signs -- each highly ambitious, but motivated by different urges. I am convinced that my experience of blending self-employment with steady work for someone else's company is meant to teach me this balance. I am humble enough to admit I've got a few lessons to learn in this department.

I am also certain of this: Once I've learned them, the tycoon in me will really soar.
